Coming in and getting unpacked: The students coming and get unpacked. They get everything they may need out of their backpack and put it on their desk. This prevents them from getting things out of their backpack later in the day when it may be a distraction. Folder Out on their desk: The students are required to put their take home folder on top of their desk as soon as they are unpacked. There is a "keep at home" side, and a "return to school" side, while the students are getting unpacked the teacher will ask to check their take home folder for notes or lunch money that may need to be turned in. This is so helpful so that they students are not coming up to the teacher later in the day during instruction, and so they do not forget to give notes to the teacher. Pencil Sharpening: The teacher has a cup with sharpened pencils before the day begins. This prevents students from being a distraction during instruction. Making a Lunch Choice: A poster is on the white board and it says " What are you having for lunch today?" The students each have a magnet with their name on it. The chart has five columns for choice 1, choice 2, choice 3, Peanut butter and jelly and lunch box. When they students come into the classroom in the morning, they need to go up to the poster and put their magnet below the area for their desired lunch choice. This prevents the students from forgetting, because if someone has no made a lunch choice the teacher can see the name on the magnets and remind them to do so. Dance Parties: Brain brakes for students include dance parties. This is a time when students get to dance and sing for one or two songs to release energy. After they have the music is off, the listen more attentively. Lining up: Usually having a line leader prevents fighting over who gets to be line leader for the day. Having the students line up with different prompts also helps students being next to people who will make them want to talk in the hall. For example, " If your birthday starts in you may line up", "If you are wearing a shirt", "If your name starts with a _", " If you are in the color table". Privacy Shields: When students take assessments, they use their binders to make privacy shields for themselves to prevent having to say " keep your eyes on your own paper". Students like having their privacy shields and it keeps them from looking on others papers. Table leader: Having a different color cone of each clusters of desks. This cone rotates to every desk in the cluster. This person who has the cone on his/her desk for the day is in charge of picking up papers for their section and giving them to the teacher. This prevents all students from trying to get papers from the teacher or trying to turn them in to her. Mailboxes: To prevent having a stack on papers on top of your desk, students will each have their mail box. As you grade the papers you put them in each students mailbox. After the have a few papers in their mailbox, at the end of the day the teacher can call a few students at the time to come get their work out of their mailbox and put it in the keep at home side of their take home folder. In the beginning of the year, the teacher gave each student a reading bag.The teacher has given each student a reading folder where there students have placed their bag. In the bag the students keep their guided reading book for the week. It is the students responsibility to take their reading bag home everyday and bring it back to school. During guided reading centers when the students come to the teacher, they also have to bring their reading bag. They know that they need to put their book in this bag. Keep it safe folder: when students don't finish their classwork they have a "keep it safe" folder where they put their unfinished work. Anytime that they complete other assignments early they are required to look in this folder so see if they have any work to do. In the mornings, the students who have work in their folder have to work on that before they can do day starter activities.
